TRNR.

TRNR.

Introduction

Introduction

TRNR is a personal passion project of mine I have been working on in spare evenings and weekends. The idea sparked for me during a session with my personal trainer Cory when I realised that he was just using the notes app on his phone to track my workout & fitness progress. As I client I would have loved to see my progress across time as well as being able to track workouts myself when not in a PT session. I was using 5 different apps (My Fitness Pal, Strong etc) to track my progress, all of which Cory had no access to. I had an in-depth chat with Cory about what he would love in a dream app he could use to run his own coaching business and that clients could also have access to. I got to work straight away building what has become TRNR. The one stop shop for personal trainers to run their entire business. From automated invoicing and accounts to tracking workouts, client nutrition and selling services online to expand beyond face-to-face clients and make money as they sleep.

Challenges

Challenges

During the projects initial design I conducted some market research online and by interviewing other personal trainers. I soon realised the app concept already existed and had businesses that were thriving financially. This proved the market demand and excited me more. Analysing compeditors I relaised there was a plethora of options but the quality of the software from a UI/UX point of view was severely lacking.

Interestingly fitness apps targeted at consumers had all of the thoughtfulness and care poured into their design but apps targeting the B2B side of the market like mine were built at best, like functional tools. A trend I have seen through-out my career. This combined with utilising AI in a way that had real impact in saving PT's time and money would be my key market diffientiator. The project is now launching this summer (2025) after nearly 3 years in development. It's been the largest product I've ever developed. One trend in the developer community that doesn't apply here is the idea of just 'get a version 1 out' and fix it later. I knew that PT's were going to use my software for every aspect of their business from invoicing to day to day interractions wit clients that it had to not only work from day one but work flawlessly and match or exceed compeditors that have 60+ staff. What motivates me pre-launch is that in the beta testing phase I have had incredible feedback from trainers who use compeditors. Compeditors with huge overheads, that are slow to move and require thousands of trainers to break even. My target is to hit 350 trainers initially at £50/mth recurring. At a 4.5x multiple that would value the business just shy of £1,000,000.
